The Self-Help And Recovery Exchange Position Summary: The Senior Accountant oversees key financial operations related to city and county government grants and contracts. This role ensures full compliance with funder requirements, prepares and reviews detailed financial reports, and supports strategic budgeting and audits. Working closely with the Controller, the Senior Accountant plays a leadership role in month-end close, financial analysis, and grants management. The ideal candidate will have deep nonprofit accounting experience, particularly with public funding (e.g., LAHSA, City of Los Angeles, Department of Mental Health), and a demonstrated ability to lead financial processes with accuracy and efficiency. Learn more about SHARE!: Essential Duties and Responsibilities Lead and manage the monthly and quarterly grant invoicing process, ensuring accuracy and alignment with contract terms. Perform and review complex reconciliations of general ledger accounts and grant revenue/expenses; prepare adjusting journal entries as needed. Oversee the tracking of expenditures and allocations to ensure full compliance with grant restrictions and budget categories. Monitor government contract receivables; investigate and follow up on billing delays and discrepancies. Prepare grant budgets in collaboration with program staff for proposals, renewals, and amendments. Analyze financial data and create reports for funders, internal departments, and leadership to support decision-making. Serve as the primary liaison for grant-related audits, preparing audit schedules and resolving inquiries. Develop and enhance internal financial procedures related to grants management and public contract compliance. Train and mentor junior accounting staff or administrative staff on invoicing, documentation, and compliance best practices. Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes including bank reconciliations and financial statement preparation. Stay informed on changes to federal, state, and local grant guidelines, GAAP, and 2 CFR Part 200 (Uniform Guidance). Ensure complete and accurate documentation of all grant-related financial activity, maintaining audit-ready records. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. CPA, CPA candidate, or equivalent nonprofit financial certification preferred. Minimum of 4 years of nonprofit accounting experience, with at least 2 years focused on managing city/county government grants and contracts. Demonstrated experience with LAHSA, City of Los Angeles, DMH, or similar public funders. Experience preparing for and supporting annual audits and funder monitoring visits. Supervisory or mentoring experience is a plus. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Advanced understanding of nonprofit fund accounting, grant compliance, and restricted funding regulations. Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct) and Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, complex reconciliations). Deep knowledge of government contract rules, invoicing procedures, and cost principles. Exceptional attention to detail and documentation practices. Strong analytical and communication skills; able to explain financial concepts to non-financial staff. Ability to work independently, prioritize deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Standard office environment (on-site, Culver City). Occasional extended hours during grant billing or audit periods.
